The murders of Ahmaud Aubery, Breonna Taylor, Geroge Floyd, Philando Castile, Sandra Bland, Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and others happened because of systemic racism rooted in white supremacy. There is no middle ground on this. Brutality towards Black people continues to be propagated by a police force emboldened to use deadly force through systems and rhetoric we condone every day.
Coffee is entrenched in systemic racism. Our history is marked by slavery, colonialism, unpaid labor, and systems that condone the exploitation of others, many of whom are Black. From the exploitation of farmers to the continued reliance of Black people to explain It all connects. If you care about coffee, you have to care about the livelihood of Black people. That includes defunding the police and continuously fighting for a just future.
