The 2010s was a roller coaster for milk trends, with oat milk ending up on top. But will oat milk retain its crown, or will we see a new plant milk ascend?
Didn't the FDA in United States implemented (or thinking about implementing) regulations prohibiting the use of the term "milk" for non-animal based products. Wondering if that will have some impact in this trend.
I wonder if that's updated! I know there's a push to limit what can be called milk, but historically, things like almond and soy milk have always been called milks, so I wonder how that context plays in. I think this is a good question, though! We can't ignore political policy in how trends are determined.
I'm not sure about the trends—I've seen pistachio milk pop up quite a bit—but my personal (and our company's) commitment to plant-based milk is also part of our commitment to environmental sustainability (all forms of industrial livestock farming are major contributors to climate change) and our recent pivot from Oatly to another oat milk brand is to deepen that commitment by choosing a brand focused on nutritional value, as well as social, economic, and environmental justice. I hope that becomes a bigger and bigger consideration in what is trending!
I think this is a good point about agency: it matters what decision-makers do! People are more likely to make sustainable decisions if you make the choice easier for them. This is cool to hear about!
My guess is that pea milk is just too embarrassing to ask for in a cafe.
I've heard the same. We need a pea rebrand!
Why didn’t anyone tell me whole milk has back in style all this time I’ve been a hot girl and did not know it!!!
Better late than never!!!
Ashley, what if more specifically I'm all about the cream aka half-n-half. Does that make me even hotter?
