I also think this pursuit of authenticity can put down people (like the kind of cheapness associated with Chinese American food and restaurants). Xyz isn't worth my time bc xyz isn't what i think abc culture is. It's wild! You can enjoy both!!!!!
The comment about food and hipsters makes me think about Chinese food, Chinese American food, and the pursuit of "authenticity". I think a lot of liberal white people (i myself am a white person) want to be supportive by pursuing "authentic" food but fail to consider the way diaspora or even just cultural exchange change food and make something that is just as delicious and authentic. Beef and broccoli is a form of Chinese food and it still has value even if it's not this uber authentic experience.
