I know! I'm in the minority! One idea I didn't explore is that a lot of coffee flavored things use coffee as a throwaway ingredient so I imagine there are wonderful versions of both espresso martinis and coffee ice cream that use quality coffee, but the majority don't! Happy to have objections in the comments!
With all the brouhaha about the espresso martini thing last year, I had to try one. And bc the martini is absolutely my fave cocktail. So I made a couple at home, trying different recipes (basically varying ratios). And it was all meh. (But then I did not have the brilliant bartender at hand as you did lol.) Anyway, this detailed account of the history and popularity is great. (As is everything you write in detail!)
I think that's part of the problem with an espresso martini — most cocktails use ingredients that are the same one place to another: a bottle of Cynar is the same if you have it at home or at your fave restaurant. But coffee quality can vary so much, and with it being the crux of the drink, it can really be a make it or break it point
I object! 😂 I love espresso martinis and coffee ice cream! Informative and fun post, Ashley!

I made my own espresso for the cocktail, and I am not the best at that - but I tried 😅
The word choice of "leaving coffee grounds to sit in stagnant water" 👌
I know I cringed as I wrote it.
