I thought about this article a lot and I see this pattern in the Starbucks union effort: Starbucks is trying to claim that they don't need a union to work with their "partners" — again, they're claiming the relationship, not working to build it with actual workers.
Your words actually felt universal to me: the ‘name dropping’, element of hinting at a relationship (whether personal or in business) that is not as deep or connected.
What this piece evoked to me after reading is that the transfer of wealth and power to exploited people is a work that privileged people can never stop doing. After I started learning about these issues I restricted the roasters I buy coffee from to those I believe are doing a meaningful contribution but I can't think I've done my job, relax and stop there - that's not enough.
